About this work

ΜΗΤΡΟΤΗΤΑ (Maternity) This sculpture by George Wyllie (2004) is titled "ΜΗΤΡΟΤΗΤΑ" (Μητρότητα is a Greek word meaning "Maternity"). It stands in Rottenrow Gardens, which are named after the Royal Maternity Hospital ("Rottenrow") which stood near here, serving Glasgow from 1860 to 2001. Part of the facade of the hospital has been preserved, and stands at the upper end of this garden area; see: 1015791. The buildings at the lower end of the gardens, seen in the background, belong to Strathclyde University. For a closer look at part of the sculpture, see: 1015432.
